In November 2018 after finding out our local iris growers weren’t continuing and feeling that we couldn’t let these fabulous plants leave Hawke’s Bay we decided to take on the nursery. In December 2018 the process of transferring the irises began. Fences went in, beds were marked out and made ready. The first irises were moved the week before Christmas and the whole operation completed by the third week in January 2019.
In February 2023 the nursery was severely damaged when it was inundated with half a metre of water and silt from the Ngaruroro River breaching its stopbank. We had been in the middle of lifting and dividing the irises and many were washed away, losing 200+ varieties. What followed was months of hard work restoring the beds. We did open in November for a limited season.
Now into our sixth season there are 500+ different cultivars including dwarf irises, over 2000 bagged irises for sale and a picking garden of over 300 plants. Display gardens in different colour palettes showcase the variety of perennials that complement these gorgeous plants.
